Recent polling averages place the AfD well ahead of the CDU and other parties ahead of the September 6, 2026, Landtag election, with the far-right party consistently at 41-43 percent while the CDU sits near 22-24 percent. This sustained lead, combined with the 5 percent threshold that risks excluding smaller parties such as the BSW, FDP, and Greens, underpins trader expectations that the AfD will secure the largest share of seats and potentially an outright majority. The CDU’s January leadership change has not narrowed the gap. Late shifts in turnout among eastern German voters or unexpected consolidation behind the CDU remain the primary variables that could still alter the outcome before election night.
