The 2026 South African municipal elections in eThekwini remain highly competitive, with no single candidate establishing a decisive lead amid a fragmented field of party nominees. Cyril Xaba, the current ANC mayor, holds the incumbent advantage but faces challenges from service delivery concerns and coalition uncertainties typical of hung councils. DA candidate Haniff Hoosen, ActionSA’s Zwakele Mncwango, EFF’s Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi, and others like Zandile Gumede draw support from distinct voter bases, reflecting proportional representation dynamics that often require post-election negotiations. Recent party announcements and voter registration drives have kept probabilities balanced, while historical patterns of shifting alliances in KwaZulu-Natal metros underscore the potential for late developments or turnout shifts to alter outcomes before the November vote.
