Alibaba's early August release of its Qwen 3.8-Max large language model, with 2.4 trillion parameters and claims of performance on par with leading U.S. systems, has solidified trader consensus around its leadership in Chinese AI. The model's open-source availability, combined with Alibaba's established cloud infrastructure and recent plans to monetize usage for major clients, reinforces its edge in benchmarks, developer adoption, and ecosystem scale over nimbler startups. While Moonshot's Kimi K3 and DeepSeek's efficient releases have shown competitive capability, they trail in overall market positioning. A late-month breakthrough benchmark win or major partnership from Z.ai, Moonshot, or DeepSeek could still shift sentiment before resolution.
