This market will resolve to “Yes” if Mitch McConnell formally announces an intention to step down or otherwise vacates his U.S. Senate seat before his current term is scheduled to end (January 3, 2027, 11:59 PM ET). Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No.” An announcement will qualify only if it indicates that McConnell will leave office prior to the scheduled end of his term. Statements reaffirming an existing plan to retire at the end of his term will not qualify. The primary resolution sources will be official statements from Mitch McConnell, his office or representatives, and/or official communications from the U.S. Senate or government.Mitch McConnell’s February 2025 announcement that he would not seek an eighth Senate term and would retire at the end of his current term in January 2027 established the baseline expectation that he intends to complete his service. Recent health setbacks, including a June 2026 fall resulting in hospitalization and pneumonia, have kept him absent from votes and public duties since mid-June, prompting Democratic calls for resignation and questions about his capacity to serve. Kentucky’s 2024 law requiring a special election rather than gubernatorial appointment in the event of a vacancy has reduced immediate political pressure to step aside. As of early August 2026, McConnell’s office reported he had been discharged from rehabilitation and was returning home, with reporting indicating few close observers expect an early exit. These factors underpin the 76.5% implied probability that he will not resign before his term concludes.
