NOAA’s updated August 2026 outlook maintains a below-normal Atlantic season driven by El Niño-enhanced wind shear and drier mid-level air that suppress intensification. Forecasters now project just 7-13 named storms, 2-6 hurricanes, and 0-2 major hurricanes through November, well below the 1991-2020 averages. Through mid-August only three weak tropical storms have formed, with no hurricanes yet observed. Category 5 landfalls require rare alignment of low shear, high ocean heat content, and favorable steering; historical U.S. occurrences remain infrequent even in active seasons. With peak activity weeks away and models consistently showing hostile conditions persisting, traders assign an 87% implied probability to no such event before 2027.
