Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority ahead of the 2026 midterms, requiring Democrats to achieve a net gain of four seats for control. Nate Silver’s FLIPR model on the Silver Bulletin gives Democrats a 56.8 percent chance of winning the chamber as of late August, reflecting a Democratic generic ballot advantage near six points and President Trump’s approval rating around 38 percent. Recent polling shifts have moved races in Texas, Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, and Maine toward toss-up or lean-Democratic status, with Texas emerging as the most probable tipping-point contest. The model incorporates polling averages, fundamentals, and historical midterm patterns, though structural factors like the number of Republican-held seats at risk continue to shape the probabilities. Updated polling and campaign developments through the fall could alter these assessments ahead of the November election.
