NOAA’s August 6 update reinforces a below-normal 2026 Atlantic season, projecting just 0–2 major hurricanes (Category 3+) through November 30 amid suppressed conditions, including only 2–6 total hurricanes. With the season’s Accumulated Cyclone Energy running far below average and only weak tropical storms (Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal) observed so far, the window for intensification and U.S. landfall of a Category 4 system (130+ mph sustained winds on the Saffir-Simpson scale) has narrowed sharply. Colorado State University similarly assigns well-below-average odds for major-hurricane landfalls along the continental U.S. coastline. Traders view the remaining peak-season window as insufficient to overcome these basin-wide constraints, supporting the 84.5% market-implied probability of no such event before 2027.
