US sanctions intensification and the ongoing naval blockade have driven Iran's rial to record lows near 2.02–2.04 million per USD in late August 2026, as oil exports have effectively halted and foreign currency inflows contracted sharply. The Trump administration's announced "economic offensive," including secondary sanctions targeting remaining trade partners, compounds war-related disruptions and inflation above 60 percent, sustaining downward pressure on the currency through September. Diplomatic mediation efforts involving Qatar and Pakistan continue amid the Strait of Hormuz impasse, yet trader consensus assigns the highest implied probability to rates at or above 2.2 million per USD by month-end, reflecting limited near-term reversal prospects absent verified de-escalation or sanctions relief.
