NYC investigators opened a preliminary criminal inquiry after two load-bearing columns buckled at the former Pfizer headquarters conversion site on July 7, 2026, prompting an evacuation and stop-work order. Engineers have since attributed the failure to omitted steel reinforcement during the office-to-residential project, while the Department of Buildings continues its probe into construction practices and subcontractor safety records. No charges have been filed in the five weeks since the incident, and such construction-related cases typically require extensive evidence of willful negligence before prosecutors act. With roughly four and a half months left before year-end and the inquiry still in early stages, traders see limited likelihood of criminal filings by December 31.
