Recent stability in the U.S. labor market, with July JOLTS job openings little changed at 7.3 million and the August employment report showing 162,000 nonfarm payroll gains plus a steady 4.1% unemployment rate, underpins the dispersed probabilities across 7.0M–7.6M+ ranges for the September 29 release. Traders price in a resilient yet cooling environment marked by the ongoing “low-hire, low-fire” pattern, moderate 3.1% year-over-year wage growth, and limited layoff pressure, while weighing potential downside from softer hiring trends and upside from manufacturing or healthcare rebounds. This produces closely matched leading outcomes around 7.3M–7.4M, reflecting uncertainty over whether August openings will hold near recent levels or shift with incoming economic data.
