Recent polls show New Zealand's major parties locked in a tight contest ahead of the November 7, 2026 election under the MMP system, with Labour and the National-led coalition trading narrow leads near 30% each. Christopher Luxon's preferred-prime-minister ratings have fallen to 17% amid economic pressures and internal National caucus tensions, including a leadership confidence vote he survived on August 12. Chris Hipkins holds a slim edge in some head-to-head measures at 15%, though Labour support has also softened. These factors sustain close implied probabilities in trader positioning between the two, as voters weigh cost-of-living concerns and coalition arithmetic. Policy announcements, further economic data releases, or shifts in minor-party support could widen the gap before election day.
