Hungary's National Assembly elected András Baka as the sole candidate for president on August 11 with 140 votes, following constitutional amendments that shortened the prior term and a nomination by the ruling Tisza party. Baka, a former Supreme Court president and European Court of Human Rights judge ousted under the previous government, faces inauguration on August 19 for the largely ceremonial role with limited veto powers. This parliamentary consensus, backed by a strong majority in the legislature, drives the market's near-certain pricing around Baka. Realistic challenges remain narrow, such as unforeseen procedural delays or last-minute legal actions before the swearing-in, though none have surfaced in official proceedings.
