Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, 2026, establishing a mutual defense commitment under which an armed attack on one member counts as an attack on all, alongside expanded military cooperation. The pact was framed as open to additional participants committed to its principles amid regional security concerns following the 2026 Iran-related conflict. Egypt has stated it is conducting in-depth reviews of legal and constitutional implications, while Bangladesh has signaled positive interest aligned with national priorities; reports indicate Iran received an invitation now under consideration, though unconfirmed by official channels. Other Gulf states such as Qatar have been discussed as candidates. Early post-signing tests, including a Houthi strike on a Saudi facility, saw no collective response invoked, highlighting the need for institutional mechanisms before broader accession. Traders monitor diplomatic statements, technical negotiations, and any new expressions of interest through year-end.
