Learner Tien enters this National Bank Open round-of-16 matchup as the clear favorite, buoyed by a strong 2026 hard-court campaign that includes a Geneva title, victories over Gael Monfils and Tommy Paul in Montreal, and a current ATP ranking near the top 20. The 19-year-old American has shown consistent depth and improved serve efficiency on outdoor hard courts. Thiago Agustin Tirante, an Argentine ranked well outside the top 50, reaches this stage for the first time against Tien and lacks recent results at this level. With no prior head-to-head history, the contest hinges on Tien’s superior recent form, ranking edge, and experience in high-stakes ATP events versus Tirante’s need to produce an upset on a surface favoring the higher-ranked player’s baseline game.
