Spencer Johnson, a 23-year-old American ranked around No. 445 with a sharp recent ranking surge from college and ITF success, faces 30-year-old Chilean Cristian Garin (No. 137) in the opening round of 2026 US Open qualifying on outdoor hard courts. Garin holds the higher ranking and Grand Slam experience but enters with a weak 3-7 record in 2026 and limited hard-court results lately, while Johnson benefits from strong lower-level form, home-crowd support, and no prior head-to-head history. The match occurs early in the qualifier schedule, with the winner advancing toward main-draw contention; surface and recent momentum favor the younger player despite the ranking gap.
